Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce that in January 2018, a long serving member of our club,Lion Gerald Adams.M.J.F. ,B.M.A. L.V has passed to Higher Service. Our thoughts are with his wife Jean, daughter Linda and son Roger.
The two awards are the highest that given from Lions International Clubs. The Melvyn Jones award (the Founder of Lions International in 1917) is given for outstanding service to the community and the Bert Mason award (Bert was a Past International President for all the Lions in the world )is given for work in a particular field.Lion Gerald took up the challenge, originally put forward to Lions by Helen Keller,to become a Knight for the Deaf.He collected unwanted, used hearing aids from hospitals and hearing aid specialists, and checked them with special equipment ,then dispatched them to the Lions Club De Grendal in Cape Town, where they are given to South African people in the Townships, free of charge,as they would never be able to afford them . Gerald was proud to be given the highest South African award, the Doctor Louis Volks award,(Louis chartered the first Lions Club,The Cape Town in 1957) in recognition of his dedication to this charity over many years.
Gerald joined Exeter West Lions on April 4th 1989,and was always a very active member. The positions he held in our club were:-Membership chairman, welfare officer, minutes secretary,Lion Tamer,Director,2nd Vice then 1st Vice then President in 1995-1996.Then he became a director of the 200 Club,(a charitable organisation),next Social chairman and assistant Treasurer of our club.In 2009,he was presented with a 20 years service medal, from the Lions International President. From 2008 to 2017,he sent over to South Africa, over 20,000 hearing aids. In November 2017 he became ill,so could no longer continue. His good work is being continued by another club member.
A Long standing Lion in our Exeter West club, passed peacefully to Higher service,on November 15th 2018.He was the father of our Fundraising Chairman,Lion Neil Moxey MJ F,and the grandfather of Lion Ashley Moxey and potential member of our club, Danny Moxey. He joined in and helped in all Lion club activities with zest and vigour, into his 80's,when he slowed down,,.A man with a good sense of humour and a committed Lion.He will be sadly missed.

A hard working and loyal member of our club,Exeter West Lions,Keith Worters, passed peacefully to Higher Service on December 11th 2018. He always helped at fund raising activities, and helping other charities raise money, like the Children's Hospice South West. He ran the PEACE POSTER competition every year, visiting many local schools and asking the teachers if 11 to 13 year old pupils could draw their individual posters on the theme decided by our South West district (a different theme on PEACE every year).this year it was "KINDNESS MATTERS".From 4 different schools,Lion Keith got 125 entries. An independent artist selected the winning poster, and this year,it was from Steiner Academy. Here is a photo of Keith with the poster. He will be sadly missed.A dedicated Lion and true gentleman.
